The Maryland Steel Pan Association is a 501c3 non-profit based in Catonsville, MD. The organization helps to promote the study of and playing of steel pan through various events by band members from around the community.
Catonsville has a long history with steel pans. In 1992, a young music teacher at Catonsville High School, James Wharton, created the area's first steel band. Catonsville High School Steel Band (CHS Steel) has been a staple every since playing for neighborhood events, nursing facilities, in the Catonsville 4th of July Parade and Rock Hall's annual Oyster Festival to mention a few.
Several other Maryland high schools have created steel bands following the success of CHS Steel. After graduation steel pan members may go one to advance their journey in college but many others lose access to play steel pans in a ensemble group.
The Maryland Steel Pan Association was created to give people access to steel pans throughout the entire community. From those former steel band members who graduated and want to continue playing, to the younger generation who may some day be a member of a high school band or to those older community members who may never had access to play but have a interest and desire to play steel pans.
